Useful Information about Driving Namibia
- Most places in Namibia are accessible by sedan vehicles. If your route involves substantial gravel and off road driving, a 4x4 is recommended.
- During the rainy season the condition of the roads can deteriorate quickly, it is worth considering a four wheel drive rental vehicle, or at least renting a vehicle with higher clearance.
- In summer daily temperatures can reach sweltering levels: air conditioning is advisable in your rental car.
- Plan your route and don’t underestimate distances and the time it may take to cover these distances.
- Consider the load your rental car will be carrying. It is safer to upgrade to a larger rental car if you are carrying several passengers and camping equipment. Overloading of rental vehicle is one of the major contributing factors to road accidents in Namibia.
- Be mindful of speed limits, generally 120km/h on tar and 80km/h on gravel, it is safer to drive below these speeds.
- Cars drive on the left hand side of the road in Namibia.
- Be aware of animals wandering onto roads, particularly in the north.
- Wildlife is most active at night, driving at night outside of urban areas is not advised.
While most of Namibia is reachable by sedan, the more remote areas require a 4x4. Namibia roads can be taxing on a car, a four wheel drive vehicle offers additional ground clearance and stability, generally making things easier and safer. Namibia 4x4 hire can be equipped for up to 5 adults. We offer rates with and without camping equipment
See our Namibia 4x4 hire page for full details regarding 4wd rental.
