35th International Geological Congress hosted in Cape Town

For the 2nd time in the history of the International Geological Congress (IGC) the Congress will be hosted on the African continent. The last time was in 1929 in Pretoria, South Africa, for over 80 years ago. So, it was about time for this important congress to return to Africa and its geological superlatives.

After a bidding process involving many other contenders, the decision was made to host the 35th IGC in Cape Town, South Africa. This major event for earth scientists, hosted every four years, will attract more than 6000 delegates from around the world and is expected to bring over R125 million pouring into the coffers of the Western Cape.

Such an event is not only of economic importance but also to show the world’s leading geological scientists what South Africa has to contribute. However, this Congress will not only strengthen South Africa’s scientific portfolio but will help the entire Southern African region to considerably strengthen scientific collaborations.

Although it is still a long way to go until the Congress will finally be held in July/August 2016, excitement and pride among South Africans over this recent development can clearly be felt.
