Hertz South Africa, South Africa’s first car rental company founded in 1919 under the name Delville Wood Motors Car Hire, Hertz car hire, under the name Africa Car Rental and owned by Bob Murry, pioneered the first Cape to Cairo chauffeur driven tours in the 1930s. Murry was granted the Hertz franchise for South Africa in the late 1950s. It was not until 1967 that Hertz’s first car rental rival emerged. Hertz left South Africa in 1986, returning to the New South Africa in 1997.
