will be upgraded to a higher class of vehicle.
Yes you are allowed to take this vehicle to Mozambique, Botswana,Namibia, but not allowed into Zimbabwe or further. -

Please note that the vehicle can cross borders at an additional charge, however rental cars are not allowed to cross the border of Zimbabwe.

I am interested in driving from Durban or Richard’s Bay to the ZuluNyala Game Reserve near Hluhluwe. From there I would like to go to either the giant waterfall in the Drakensburg Mtns or else the area around Blyde River Canyon.
How far (driving time) is the trip to either of these places from the reserve and how are the road conditions?
Will I be needing a 4x4?

The roads between Hluhluwe and Blyde River Canyon are in good condition, and you should be able to maintain a steady 120km/h most of the time - 7 hours is a realistic estimated driving time, even if you make a few stops along the way.
A 2x4 would be fine, unless you are looking to do any heavy off-road driving. Once again, the 2x4 should be quite capable on the smaller dirt roads - height clearance is more important here, than actual 4x4 capabilities.
Petrol goes for around R9.50 per litre - we do not have any hybrid vehicles on our fleet just yet.
How many of you will be travelling in this vehicle? This way we can judge which 4x4 to quote you on… We are unfortunately not affiliated with any frequent user/flyer programs.

The Daihatsu Terios is the best budget vehicle to use in National Parks and Game Reserves - it’s a full 4x4 and has pretty good road height clearance. The only problem with this vehicle is that it is pretty small so is best suited for 2/3 people with small-sized luggage.
These unfortunately are only available in manual transmission.

After looking through your pages I’m pretty sure that the Terios is the car we need for our march-april holiday - one woman and two young girls, with slightly more than basic luggage, and wanting to travel KwaZulu, Lesotho, Mozambique.
However:
Is it possible to cross the Mozambique border from the Elephant coast to Ponta da Ouro in this kind of car, or would we need something more heavy duty? It is stated that 4x4 is necessary.also, Can luggage be conceiled (is this a security concern like in Europe), and is car theft a concern at all? (Our rental car was stolen in Sicily and it ruined the last half of our holiday there. Common, it appears).
and finally -Is driving in cities (will avoid the really big ones, but Durban, Port E., Maputo) even possible without too much hassle for a foreign woman used to right hand driving? and Securitywise?
