Celebrate Heritage day with a braai and top events

Whether you like to call it Braai day, Family day or Heritage day, Saturday the 24th of September is  a public holiday and every South African is planning to hang with the family, chill-out, and just enjoy a good old *tjoppie and wors.

All South Africans love a *braai and it is only appropriate that a whole day be set aside for this wonderful and tasty tradition.

Except for braaing up a storm, there are quite a few things to do in sunny SA to make the most of your long weekend (some rather clever South Africans take Friday off as well). Hire a car and join one of the following exciting events in your region and be back in time to watch the New Zeeland versus France game at home:

In the Western Cape:

The Paarl Cultivaria Festival offers theatre, dance, comedy and classics will be on show and as well as wine tastings and daily cooking demonstrations. The festival is now being held at the Paarl Amphitheatre. This new terrain means a beautiful view over the entire Paarl Valley! There will be convenient parking and all theatres are within a 50 m radius of our main arena.

In the Garden Route:

Gastronomica is a food enthusiasts paradise held in September in Knysna. At Gastronomica you can expect delicious food, music, dance and heaps of fun for the children, demonstrations, workshops and talks by people who are celebrated for their contribution to the food and hospitality industry.

In the Eastern Cape:

The 20th Loerie Naartjie Festival promises a day of family filled fun - on sale will be farm vegetables, pancakes, wors rolls, hamburgers, biltong, home-made jams and of course naartjies!

Loerie is an excellent choice for a stopover destination for those travelling from Port Elizabeth along the Baviaanskloof route and the festival is ath the top of everyone’s to do list.

In the Northern Cape:

Running for four whole days, The Kalahari Kuier festival attracts more than 30 000 people each year. See some of South Africa’s top talent performing right next to the Oranje river.

In Durban and Kwazulu Natal:

Various activities are planned for the whole family at the Heritage market just outside Pietermaritzburg. Entertainment includes the Twirly whirly swing, face painting, balloon sculpting as well as the very popular Animal Menagerie.

In Gauteng:

The Pinotage on Tap is an important event for anyone passionate about wine, especially The Original Coffee Pinotage. Enjoy live music from bands such as Lonehill Estate at the Cradle of Humankind, Cradle Restaurant, Lanseria.

*What’s a braai in one sentence? Cape Town Magazine asked Jan Braai, the guy who started it all. "A sociable gathering of people around a fire cooking food in the healthiest way possible," says the man behind National Braai Day. Who would know better than the guy who achieved the world record for braaing for 28.5 hours, the longest continuing braai ever!
